The quality and the rank of tea bags
People living in busy lives usually choose the convenient way, tea bags, to brew tea. The material of tea bags can be cotton paper or polyethylene terephthalate(PET) [1-4]:
- Tea bags made of cotton paper weigh light. Sometimes it is fixed with staples. However, there are problems of metal use in the high temperature or the issues that the release of impurities may influence the quality of tea. Furthermore, to increase the durability, some tea bags would be added chemical materials, and thus harms our health[1-4].
- Tea bags made from polyethylene terephthalate(PET), the most common use now, have the better effect of filter. However, PET is unable to bear in the high temperature, usually 85 degrees Celsius at most. There may be the worry of plasticizer if brewing in the hot water, which could influence the endocrine system, and increase the risks of getting cancer[1-4].
Therefore, we have to make sure what material tea bags use at first before brewing tea. Meanwhile, to prevent the release of chemical materials that would harm our health, the label of tea bags should be avoided to soak in the hot water as well. Drinking tea with tea leaves can be another choice of brewing. On the other hand, the shape of tea bags can be flat or stereoscopic. There is smaller space for tea to stretch in flat tea bags. Therefore, it usually contains more crushed tea, and the scent would release faster. In contrast, stereoscopic tea bags provide enough space for tea to stretch. It usually contains more complete tea leaves, and the taste is stronger as well[1-4].
The quality of tea bags is ranked by the position of tea leaves on tea trees, the shape and the size of tea leaves. B(Broken)means crushed, G(Golden)means golden, O(Orange)means orange, F(Flowery)means fragrant or soft, P(Pekoe)means Pekoe, and T(Tippy)means small buds. They are combined to develop the words, such as OP, BOP, FOP, TGFOP, and so on. Sometimes, there are FGS(Fanning) which means tea tablets or crushed tea and D(Dust) which means tea dusts. In addition, the number indicates the rank in each level. Introduce the simple summary as following[5-7]:
|Flowery Orange Pekoe(FOP)||the top leaves on tea trees with more buds.|
|Orange Pekoe (OP)||the second top leaves on tea trees. Tea leaves are longer and complete.|
|Pekoe (P)||the third top leaves on tea trees. Tea leaves are short and coarse.|
|Broken Orange Pekoe(BOP)||crushed tea, or called loose tea. It takes shorter time to brew, and the taste is stronger, which is the common use in tea bags.|
|Broken Orange Pekoe Fanning(BOPF)||smaller than crushed tea(BOP). It is called tea tablets or fanning. The taste is strong|
|Dust (D)||smaller than fanning, which ranks the little. It takes short time to brew, and is also the common use in tea bags.|
